Property Description

Cottage in Avrillé les Ponceaux, Indre et Loire, France

Cottage in Rural Location in Easy Reach of the Loire Chateaux, Vineyards and an 18 Hole Golf Course
Ideal Place to Enjoy the Area’s Varied History, Food and Wine or Just to Chill Out
6 adults comfortably (3 bedrooms, 4 if required)

La Chenaie, nearly 200 years old, is situated on a minor road between two small villages, Avrillé and St Symphorien les Ponceaux in a garden of grass, trees and a small wood, in all about an acre. When we purchased it in 1989, the ground floor had been carefully restored by the previous owners, who fitted cupboards in the kitchen using the doors from a salvaged 19th century kitchen from Normandy, and created the downstairs bathroom from where the original inhabitants kept their livestock. The previous owners made the best possible use of the cottage’s original features, leaving sound beams in place and replacing others so that the whole of the downstairs with the exception of the bathroom is beamed. We created the upstairs accommodation – late 20th Century DIY. Because of the thickness of the walls, the downstairs rooms stay quite cool during hot summer days and, with the open fire and electric heaters, quite comfortable when it gets colder.

Notes on prices
Because all your heating costs are included in the rental, it is markedly more expensive for us to let the house during the colder months, hence a rental identical to summer prices during winter, with a reduction in the spring months that reflects our lower heating cost. Please note also that between November and late March, it is usually possible to arrange a shorter stay at a cost of £60 per night, with a minimum stay of 2 nights.

Changeover day
Fridays between 1 March and 31 October each year. Fridays also during the winter period for booking of a week or more. 2 to 4 night stays can usually be arranged for stays between the beginning of November to the end of March at £60 per night

Notes on accommodation
The cottage’s age creates a few issues:- the 45 degree staircase has been described as “steep” [but a couple renting the property and choosing to use the downstairs bedroom would have no need to go upstairs]; anyone more than 5 ft 6 must learn to duck a little when moving between the séjour and the kitchen; taller guests also need to be aware of the oven hood while working in the kitchen; the kitchen has only one window so natural light is in short supply [to compensate, though, there are five electric light sources]; finally, the attractive open stone interior walls downstairs in the house generate dust quite quickly.

There are no special rail or support provisions for disabled guests, but the whole of the ground floor is on one level. However, the interior doorway spaces would probably not allow a standard wheelchair to pass.

You’ll find:- hard standing for your car; a patio with table, chairs and a built-in barbecue; a large garden, mainly grass and trees, hedged from the road and surrounded by woodland elsewhere, with two swing seats and a small round table and chairs for a breakfast “en plein air”.
Guests have found the garden to be a delight – whether because their young children enjoyed exploring the small woodland area or playing badminton on the grass, or whether the adults wanted, [but not at the same time!] to improve their golf approach shots [clubs, balls and putting surface not supplied!]. Other guests enjoyed the peace that the garden affords, bringing birds to the bird table and a whole range of butterflies and moths to the buddleia.
Guests also like the west facing patio because the side of the house soaks up the heat of the day and gives it back around sunset, so that an evening meal on the patio after a warm summer’s day from late May to early September need not finish much before 11pm.

La Chenaie is far from the sea, but there are lakeside beaches and lake swimming at three spots within ten kilometres.

The nearest airport is Tours 45 minutes by car, serviced daily by Ryanair flights from Stansted. The nearest TGV station is Tours, about 50 minutes away, but linked by local trains from Langeais, only 15 minutes away by car, so guests can do Disneyland and back in one tiring day.
But it’s absolutely necessary to have a car at La Chenaie, which is less than 3.5hrs from Caen or Dieppe and about 5hrs from Calais, much by motorway [about €30] until the last 45 minutes of country roads.

1km: Avrillé. Le Chaudron – bar/café/shop/restaurant, inexpensive lunches -bread & croissants to order.
5km: Savigné sur Lathan – nearest health practices, supermarket, bank, fuel and a few shops.
10km: Chateaux at Cléré and Giseux – fishing, horse riding, swimming & tennis opportunities.
between 12km & 25km: Langeais and Bourgueil – Chateaux, banks, street & hypermarkets, restaurants & shops.
Golf at Sept Tours. Chateaux & restaurants at Azay & Villandry.
30-50km: Saumur, Tours & Le Mans.

Further details
There is a wide range of restaurants to choose from, Serge at le Chaudron d’Avrillé offers a €12.8 3-course lunch including wine every day except Sundays – plenty of choice, and it has never disappointed. At the other end of the scale, Au Coin des Halles in Langeais or L’Aigle d’Or at Azay offer Michelin quality meals and service at very reasonable prices: a 3 course evening meal with wine for around 40 euros a head. Or you can try the Michelin star restaurants in the wider area – at least three. These five, and the wide choice of “in between” restaurants, all offer less expensive lunch time meals.

Once the booking has been confirmed we sent you a 20-page A5 booklet about the cottage and the area to help you plan your days at La Chenaie.

You can also get a good view of the house and its woodland setting on Google street map. Follow the D70 eastwards from Avrillé les Ponceaux. La Chenaie is marked.

When comparing our prices, please remember that we make no extra charges for heating costs.
