Sleeps 2,1 bedroom. Price From €140 Per Night

Montmirail has an absorbing history – originally a simple medieval fort on a hilltop, it has seen meetings of kings and was transformed into an elegant château by the Princess of Conti, daughter of Louis XIV. Once through the imposing iron gates visitors on guided tours pass through the exquisite reception rooms with painted panelling; lucky B&B guests go behind the scenes and climb the stairs to bedrooms with original features intact but charmingly restored with soft modern lighting, sumptuous beds and sparkling new bathrooms. One has original rich flowery wallpaper, another a velvet headboard, all have views.

Breakfast, a feast of organic eggs, ham. locally-made bread, cheese and pastries, is taken in the medieval dining room around one large table – or outside on the view-filled terrace. The owners are on hand at weekends; at other times charming Angelique looks after guests. Discover the drawing room with Louis XV chairs, relax in a (lower key) sitting room on a comfortable sofa surrounded by good artwork, wander at will on the smooth lawn, head further afield for heaps of pretty villages.

Chambre d’honneur

Enjoy the lovely views from its windows and then let yourself fall asleep in its enchanting alcove bed. The room adjoins the Chambre Hortensia with a connecting door allowing for a family stay.

Outside

The castle and the park are classified as a French Monument and are perched on the “Mons Mirabilis”, one of the culminating points of the Sarthe, thus allowing it to be admired from afar. Indeed, the castle appears on the horizon wherever you may be coming from in the beautiful Perche countryside.

Upon arriving, you will be taken aback by the variety of its architecture and its excellent state of upkeep. Falling midway between a dwelling and a fortified castle, the Montmirail site is exceptional: all of the construction periods are represented here.

The ground level (dungeons and arms rooms) dates back to the twelfth century, whereas the facades (fifteenth and eighteenth century) feature alongside a Renaissance door adorned with delicate bas-reliefs. The castle took on other regalia during the nineteenth century, with its imposing crenelated tower boasting at its top an Observatory that rises approximately thirty metres from the ground.

From the terrace of the park, you can admire a panoramic view of the Perche Sarthois. The stables, the dovecote and the caretaker’s lodge are still standing.

Lastly, the cold room (the largest in the department) allowed to store food up until the beginning of the last century.

All of these treasures combined form an invitation to stroll through and visit or enjoy for a weekend a site that is full of history, where time seems to be suspended.

Further Details

Located between Le Mans and Chartres, at the frontiers of Eure-et-Loir, Loir-et-Cher and Sarthe, the small character town of Montmirail is home to its eponymous castle, which is an exceptional site in myriad ways. Indeed, this fifteenth century castle stands out for its unobstructed view over the Perche Sarthois, which it dominates at an altitude of more than 300 metres, not to mention its rich architecture that bears the traces of each era in a stunning mixture of styles: the Middle Ages, the fifteenth century, the Renaissance and the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

As early as during Antiquity, Montmirail was occupied by the Romans. It started being built approximately in the fifth century of our era around what was a simple wooden tower elevated on a mound of earth. The wooden edifice evolved over time and eventually disappeared to make place for the famous U-shaped castle, which boasts a central courtyard.

A testament to defensive castles, this medieval fortress now stands in contrast with the eighteenth century castles, the latter being fully fledged dwellings where major historical figures resided.
