Further Details

For more than five centuries, and possibly as far back as Roman times, the mas has nestled at the foot of the mediaeval village of Lussan, perched high above on its stone crag.

Over the centuries new buildings, barns, silk farm and granary, were added around a stunning internal courtyard with a Roman-tiled roof and warm cream stone walls and steps. Today, with the soothing sound of running water, the courtyard garden is a haven of peace and tranquility – a cool place to sit on a hot summer’s day and a sociable hub for guests in the early evening.

Superbly and lovingly restored, every care has been taken to preserve the unique soul of the mas, with each apartment retaining its own distinct character. Vaulted ceilings, curving walls, exposed beams and traditional shutters create a classic Provencal feel throughout.

There are lots of quiet spots to relax in, with the gentle sound of water in the background. Discover our wildlife – Bousquette is a haven for nature. Or enjoy our large heated swimming pool set within its own safe walled garden. Depending on the weather, we swim from late March to late October.

The whole mas makes a fabulous setting for a wedding or large family holiday.

Gard Provençal is Provence as it used to be; unspoiled, uncrowded and stunningly lovely. Uzès, one of the best-preserved mediaeval towns in Europe, is a few minutes away, its twice-weekly market justly famous.

We are in easy reach of great cities like Nîmes, Avignon, Orange, Montpellier; the wilderness of the Camargue and the mountains of the Cévennes and Ardêche are close by. The area drips with history and abounds with walks and bike rides. The region is famous for cycling – both road and mountain (the Tour de France comes by most years). Borrow our bikes and explore. Serious cyclists, for whom this makes an ideal base, bring your own bikes. Canoeing, rock climbing, horse riding, tennis & paragliding within minutes.

Food & Wine Tasting

France has great food, wine, and at reasonable prices. The lunch-time menus are an experience not to be missed, with a good selection to choose from; typically, a starter, main course, cheese and dessert for 12€, with wine often included in the price.

There is a good choice of restaurants with fine cuisine and Michelin stars. We are always happy to give recommendations and make a reservation for you.

We can also arrange, through third parties, guided wine tours.

Whilst many winemakers are happy to show you round, and offer a little ‘degustation gratuit’ (free wine tasting) in the hopes you may then purchase, they are usually working farms, where time is short, and the owner speaks little or no English. Structured tours take the uncertainty out of a trip, covering several vineyards as standard.

Take a closer look at the complex growing conditions that form the ‘terroir’, learn the magic of French winemaking from the vigneron in the chai, and linger in the tasting room to try out the fruits of their labours. White and red wines are made using different techniques and processes. Learn and see for yourself about growing vines, the harvesting, pressing, and maceration of grapes, and the fermentation, storage, oak barrelling, blending and bottling of the wine at a working vineyard.
